The Lighting Knowledge
Company, since 1981
For over 45 years, P.L. Light Systems has engineered horticultural lighting for commercial greenhouses, vertical farms, and indoor cultivators across North America.
We are horticultural lighting specialists, not a fixture reseller.
P.L. Light Systems specifies, sources, and engineers horticultural lighting for commercial growers. Every LED fixture is DLC Horticultural Certified and CSA-listed. Every light plan is modeled with professional light planning software against a real room and location. We don't resell what we don't engineer.

45+ years of horticultural lighting
From the founding of a specialty horticulture lighting supplier in Beamsville to the engineered LED systems powering today's largest commercial CEA growing operations across North, Central, and South America.
P.L. Light Systems is founded in Beamsville
Established in Beamsville, Ontario to supply horticultural lighting to North American greenhouse growers. Early years focused on replacement lamps and ballasts for existing HID and magnetic HPS systems.
Moving from lamps to engineered systems
First full horticultural lighting systems delivered to Ontario cut-flower and vegetable greenhouses. Fixture, reflector, and ballast specified together for the unique needs of each crop and greenhouse structure.
Electronic HPS becomes the industry workhorse
Electronic ballasts gain in popularity amongst horticulture industry for their efficiency and output. P.L. Light Systems scales HPS supply across Ontario, Quebec, and into U.S. greenhouses.
Direct service across North, Central, and South America
P.L. Light Systems sales and support extend beyond Canada and the United States to Mexico, Central, and South America. Our focus stays on this continent: we design for its climates, crops, and growing conditions.
Double-Ended HPS technology is introduced
The innovation and introduction of a double-ended connection for HPS lamps delivers a more uniform light spread across the canopy and longer lamp life when paired with a high-frequency electronic ballast.
LED enters the product engineering roadmap
P.L. Light Systems launches its first LED product: the HortiLED TOP. The first commercial LED trials are launched. Early trial data feeds the internal research practice that informs later product development.
Technical content becomes a core service
As The Lighting Knowledge Company, P.L. Light Systems' investment in published resources grows into what is now a 140+ article Knowledge Center: cultivation guides, expert insights, listicles, and per-crop lighting strategy.
Cannabis lighting delivered at commercial scale
Pure Sunfarms, Canopy Growth Corp, and other licensed Canadian cannabis producers deploy hybrid systems from P.L. Light Systems. Hybrid HPS + LED lighting strategies emerge from the engineering practice.
Tunable-spectrum LED becomes the standard
Tunable-spectrum supplemental LED fixtures paired with wireless MeshIQ controls unlock DLI management, dimming schedules, and spectrum control across the CEA facility, zone by zone.
Celebrating 45+ years of lighting engineering
An in-house lighting plan practice using professional light planning software for photometric design, plus the deepest free technical library in horticultural lighting, 45 years in the making.
What we've built

The people behind every custom P.L. Light Systems plan
Each region we serve is owned by a named sales manager with deep greenhouse and horticultural experience. Customer service runs across every territory, anchoring projects from spec sheet to post-commissioning.
Engineering, end to end
A commercial fixture is engineered across four disciplines: photometric, thermal, optical, and mechanical. Every one matters. The work spans custom light plans and calculations, mounting solutions, and new product development. A light plan isn’t a photometric drawing; it’s a system design that ships only after all four hold up. The four stages below are how every P.L. Light Systems deployment moves from brief to operating facility.
Understand the facility
and the crop
Room dimensions, mounting heights, greenhouse glazing, crop stage strategy, DLI targets, power constraints, geography, and budget. Every project starts with the specifics of your operation. We build the complete brief before we quote a single fixture.
Engineer the custom
light plan
Layout and simulation with professional light planning software. PPFD uniformity, photoperiod strategy, connected load, optical distribution, and thermal load all sized against your room. You receive a detailed light plan unique to your operation, not just a fixture count.
Ship the system
to your facility
Systems ship from our Hamilton, Ontario facility. Fixtures arrive on pallets with the documented light plan and cabling layout. Your licensed electrician wires the system. Our team stays on call for technical questions from delivery through commissioning.
Verify, maintain, and stand
behind the system
Post-commissioning measurement to verify your light levels match the plan, seasonal tuning, fixture maintenance, and warranty service across North America. If the deployed fixtures aren’t hitting the predicted PPFD, our team returns to recalibrate and service.
Where P.L. Light Systems light plans are engineered
Our Hamilton, Ontario facility houses the light plan engineering team and the assembly floor. Photometric design happens here, end to end. The standard hasn’t changed since 1981: Dutch craftsmanship, held to the most stringent North American regulatory requirements.
In-house photometric design
Every custom light plan is built with professional light planning software, modeled against your actual room geometry and geography.
Canadian assembly and QA
Every fixture is assembled, burn-in tested, and QA checked in our Hamilton, Ontario facility before it ever ships to your growing operation.
DLC + CSA + IP66
Every LED fixture is DLC Horticultural Listed, CSA Certified, and IP66 wet-location rated, with certification numbers on the spec sheet for rebates.
Light plan design team
A dedicated in-house team designs every custom light plan, tuned to your facility’s geometry, crops, and local growing conditions.
