Hamilton, ON, Canada — Following this week’s news that Hortilux Schréder has filed for bankruptcy, P.L. Light Systems is moving to clarify that the two companies are entirely separate businesses under different ownership, and that the North American manufacturer’s operations remain unaffected.
“Because our companies share a visual and historical resemblance, we want to address this directly,” the company said in a statement. “P.L. Light Systems is a separate entity from Hortilux Schréder and an independently owned company.”
A shared origin, a long-separate path
P.L. Light Systems traces its roots to 1981. In 1992, the company was purchased by Hortilux Schréder and operated for nearly three decades as an independent subsidiary serving North and South America — which is the source of the similar branding the two companies still carry today.
That changed on December 1, 2020, when P.L. Light Systems was sold to private Canadian ownership, a structure it has operated under ever since. In June 2026, the company entered a strategic partnership with Dutch Lighting Innovations, which it says strengthens its position as a leader in horticultural lighting.
“Same roots. Different company. Different ownership,”

No impact on operations, P.L. Light Systems says
According to the company, this week’s bankruptcy news has no bearing on its business. “After 45 years in business, we remain a healthy, viable independent Canadian business entity that is fully staffed, fully stocked, and fully committed to the growers who rely on us,” the statement reads.
P.L. Light Systems also extended its sympathies to others across the industry navigating the fallout of Hortilux Schréder’s bankruptcy. “Our thoughts are with everyone in our industry affected by this news — after 45 years in this business, we know what it takes to build something like this, and we don’t take that lightly.”
The company says growers with questions about their accounts, orders, or products can continue to reach out to their P.L. Light Systems representative directly.
